26 Teas Kenya The first tea bushes were planted by British settlers in 1903 as an experiment in Limuru, in the Kiambu region. Production gradually increased, and tea became an important economic asset for the country. In 1964, the Kenya Tea Development Authority (KTDA) was established to unite smallholder farmers and promote tea cultivation. Today, tea is mainly grown in the Kenyan highlands at altitudes ranging from 1,520 to 2,750 metres above sea level. Most tea leaves are processed using the CTC method for the production of portioned teas, while smaller quantities are used to make orthodox teas, which are exported worldwide.
