A short tea and coffee dictionary or how to understand each other better Leaf Grade Designations for Whole Leaf Teas SFTGFOP1 – Special Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe - the finest grade of delicate Darjeeling teas, made exclusively from the first two leaves and the tender bud of the tea plant. FTGFOP1 – Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe - Premium quality with a lower content of buds from Darjeeling and Assam. TGFOP1 – Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe - Designation for quality teas from Darjeeling and Assam. GFOP1 – Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe - High- quality tea from Kenyan plantations. It contains a large number of buds and is less common in India. FOP1 – Flowery Orange Pekoe - An Indian black tea with long, elegant leaves and a subtle presence of buds. OP – Orange Pekoe - Teas originating mainly from Ceylon and Java, characterized by long, wiry leaves without buds. PS – Pekoe Souchong - Teas made from larger, more robust leaves. P – Pekoe - Crafted using the entire tea leaf for a fuller flavor. Leaf Grade Designations for Broken Leaf Teas FTGFBOP – Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe. TGFBOP – Tippy Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe. STGBOP – Special Tippy Golden Broken Orange Pekoe. TGBOP – Tippy Golden Broken Orange Pekoe. GFBOP – Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe. GBOP – Golden Broken Orange Pekoe. FBOP – Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe. BOP – Broken Orange Pekoe - A tea from the lower regions of Ceylon, crafted with leaves gently crushed by a unique method. BP – Broken Orange. BPS – Broken Pekoe Souchong. PF – Pekoe Fannings – Tea fannings, also used in the production of regular tea bags. D – Dust – Tea dust, the most common grade used for making tea bags. Other Abbreviations CL – Tea crafted from carefully cloned tea bushes for consistent quality. CH – Tea made from a blend of Chinese tea plants of similar quality (China). Spl – A tea crafted from specially selected Chinese tea bushes (Special). EARLY FIRST FLUSH (January – February), sometimes also called Winter Tea. FF – First Flush (February-April). IN-BETWEEN (April – May), harvest from late April and early May, sometimes also called Late First Flush. SF – Second Flush (May-June) summer harvest, also called Spring Flush. AUTUMNAL FLUSH (October – November), a high-quality harvest following the rainy season in October and November. Coffee AA – Indicates grading of beans by size and density. The best coffees from Kenya usually fall into this category. A HOAC – A coffee cooperative bringing together over 1,900 farmers in the Okapa region. SHG – Strictly High Grown, SHB - Strictly Hard Bean, The coffee was grown at an altitude exceeding 1,200 m a.s.l., meaning higher density = higher quality. EP – European Preparation, Hand-sorted coffee free of defective beans. The sorting process is carried out multiple times.
